Lower Rouge River Recreational Trails Update

Canton Leisure Services, Public Safety and Municipal Services Departments have partnered together on the Lower Rouge River Recreational Trail Project in an effort to meet the residential request for more outdoor recreation opportunities.

Construction of the trail system is a multi-phase project that will take years to complete. The first phase of the system is currently being constructed from the ITC Corridor west to Sheldon Road and will open this spring. Once completed, Phase I of the trail system will be approximately two to three miles in length and can be used for mountain biking, cross country skiing, running, and walking.

Please note that motorized vehicles will not be permitted. Phase I will open to the public on Saturday, June 7.

The Grand Opening will take place in conjunction with River Day and multiple environmental activities are planned.

Phase II of the trail project will take place from the ITC corridor east to I-275 and will be constructed later this fall.

Portions of Phase I and II will be paid for using a 50/50 grant from Wayne County. Additional funding requirements will utilize in-kind services and fund budgets.

Future phases include connecting the trail from Sheldon west to Canton Center and from the ITC corridor north to Flodin Park. Construction timelines for these phases will be dependant on availability of future funding.

Canton residents interested in helping to support, maintain, improve and champion the new trail system are urged to join the trail’s steering committee. The committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Lower Level of Canton’s Administration Building. For more information please call 394-5310.

Canton Township prides itself on providing an excellent system of parks which offer a variety of activities for residents, plus a place for families to gather for picnics and other outdoor activities. Park pavilions, gazebo, and the Amphitheater in Heritage Park are available for rental by community groups and individuals.

The Parks Division has a year-around responsibility for the daily operations of all Canton parks, grounds maintenance for all township buildings and community-owned cemeteries, and operational support for recreational activities and special events. Parks employees provide service and support to other divisions, outside of Leisure Services, as requested.
