Canton To Host Celebration For Hometown Olympic Gold Medalist Allison Schmitt

(Canton, MI August 9, 2012) A Canton community rally in honor of hometown Olympic Gold Medalist Allison Schmitt is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Heritage Park Amphitheater, located next to the Summit on the Park at 1150 S. Canton Center Road.

Residents and well-wishers are invited to join in the celebration of Allison Schmitt’s five 2012 Summer Olympic medal wins during this free special event, which will feature a special presentation to this world-class athlete by Canton Supervisor Phil LaJoy.

The BeckRidge Choral will also be on hand to perform the United States National Anthem. In addition, the Pom Squad from Canton High School, Schmitt’s alma mater, will also be performing during the festivities.

Come and congratulate Olympian Allison Schmitt during this special meet and greet. Rally participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating. In the event of inclement weather, this community celebration will be held in the Summit on the Park’s gymnasium, located at 46000 Summit Parkway, with entry limited to the first 400 participants. Commemorative miniature flags and gold medals will be handed out during the rally, while supplies last.

Fresh from the official closing ceremony, Schmitt will be spending time in Canton with her family before heading back to her senior year at the University of Georgia. This former Canton High School graduate competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, which were held in London July 27 August 12, 2012. Officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad, these games featured 32 sports and 302 events.

Considered one of the best middle distance swimmers in the country, Schmitt is a member of Team USA for the second time, competing and medaling in five swimming events at this year’s Summer Olympics. Schmitt’s first medal of the 2012 Olympics was the Bronze medal earned for the U.S. Women’s 400-meter freestyle relay. Next, Schmitt took home the silver in the 400-meter freestyle. Schmitt won Gold in the 200-meter freestyle setting an American and Olympic record. Next Schmitt earned two additional gold medals for the 800-meter freestyle relay and one for the 400-meter medley relay. Schmitt previously won a bronze in the 800-meter freestyle relay in Beijing in 2008.

22-year-old Schmitt was born in Pittsburgh and currently resides with her parents Ralph and Gail Schmitt and her siblings in Canton, MI. She graduated from Canton High School in 2008 and attends the University of Georgia, where she will return in the fall for her final year of NCAA swimming eligibility.
