(Canton, MI – August 3, 2012) In an effort to provide low-income Michigan families greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables, Canton Farmers Market will once again offer the Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program—a statewide initiative presented by the Fair Food Network which encourages healthier food choices for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Bridge Card recipients by matching up to $20 in Bridge Card purchases per market day with Double Up Food Bucks tokens for the purchase of Michigan-grown produce. The Canton Farmers Market, held every Sunday through Oct. 14, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Preservation Park, is one of 70 Farmers Markets in Michigan currently participating in the Double Up Food Bucks program. To take advantage of this program and receive the dollar-for-dollar match of up to $20 in DUFB tokens per market day, Bridge Card holders can request tokens at that Canton Farmers Market info table, located on the back porch of the Bartlett-Travis House. Shoppers can then spend their Bridge Card tokens with Canton Farmers Market vendors on any SNAP-eligible food item. Double Up Food Bucks tokens can only be used for Michigan produce. Look for DUFB and SNAP signage at participating vendors. "Double Up Food Bucks is a great Fair Food Network program that promotes accessibility of healthy food," said Tina Lloyd, Canton Farmers Market Manager. "At the Market, we provide tips for stretching your dollars and storing produce safely." Officially launched in August 2010, the DUFB program continues to reach thousands of Michigan residents while benefiting hundreds of local farmers. In this sprit of accessibility, the Canton Farmers Market also offers market-goers FREE information and activities, including: entertainment, recipes, lawn and garden advice, cooking demos, and kids’ crafts. For more information on the DUFB program, please stop by the information table on the back porch of the Bartlett-Travis House during Market hours or visit doubleupfoodbuks.org. Canton’s weekly Farmers Market is held at Preservation Park, located at 500 N. Ridge Road in Canton, MI.
