Canton Community To Host Detroit Institute of Arts Replicas

Canton, MI – June 28, 2012 - The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is bringing high-quality reproductions of its masterpieces to various Canton locations this summer as part of its Inside|Out program, a successful outreach project which installs replicas of its famous works in outdoor public spaces throughout metro Detroit.

Now in its third year, this popular program sponsored by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, continues to surprise and delight community members and visitors with strategically placed reproductions of famous works from the DIA’s permanent collection.

A total of six weather-protected reproductions will be on display in Canton for residents and visitors to discover around town: Animals in Landscape by German artist Franz Marc at the Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway; Young Woman with a Violin by Italian artist Orazio Gentileschi at the Canton Public Library, located at 1200 S. Canton Center Road; Talking Oak by English artist William Maw Egley at the Canton Administration Building, located at 1150 S. Canton Center Road; The Merrymakers by French artist Carolus-Duran at the Heritage Park Amphitheater, located adjacent to the Canton Administration Building; Girl and Laurel by American artist Winslow Homer in Preservation Park, located at 500 N. Ridge Road; and Saint Jerome in His Study by Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road.

Celebrating the richness and diversity of the DIA's extensive collection, the Inside|Out program is aimed at inspiring audiences outside of the museum walls in these "temporary" open-air galleries. Close to scale to the original works of art, these brilliantly copied reproductions will remain on display through September 2012.

Residents of Canton can enjoy a FREE day at the DIA, located at 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each resident will receive up to four free passes by showing a photo ID. Canton residents are encouraged to visit the DIA on this free day to experience 'their' works of art in person and enjoy the variety of activities the museum offers.

Canton is one of 13 communities selected this year for the Inside|Out program, which provides from five to 12 reproductions usually set up within walking or bike-riding distance from each other. Additional communities participating this summer, include: Clawson; Clinton Township; Dearborn; Detroit; Ferndale: Garden City; Harrison Township; Northville; Royal Oak; Trenton; Troy; and Waterford.

The DIA will be working with Canton Leisure Services and the Canton Public Library to plan educational opportunities including docent-led tours, as well as other fun activities, such as chalk art re-creations, family picnics in the park, and more!
