Canton Leisure Services Earns Michigan Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) Awards

Canton, MI, February 10, 2010 - Canton Leisure Services received special statewide recognition at the 2010 Michigan Recreation & Park Association's Annual Conference held earlier this month in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Canton Leisure Services was honored with the Innovative Recreation Programming Award for its "Random Acts of Fitness" program and the Marketing Showcase Award in the Single Brochure category for the "2009 Fall Discover Brochure."

The Innovative Recreation Programming Award, granted to only four exceptional recreation programs in Michigan this year, was presented to Jennifer Provenzano, Travis Faulkner, Amanda Buelow, Jennifer Judycki, and Jon-Eric Cornellier for the creation and implementation of this well-liked program.

First started in 2009, "Random Acts of Fitness" was developed to reward Canton residents for making healthy choices and living active lifestyles. Over the past year, Leisure Services staff hit the streets and ‘busted’ individuals who were engaged in healthy activities, such as: riding a bike, walking a dog, roller skating, jogging and much more. Individuals who were ‘caught in the act’ participating in a healthy activity were rewarded for their fitness selection and given a gift bag containing T-Shirts, water bottles, Frisbees and other fun items.

"It’s our hope that this popular program encourages folks to Get Outdoors in every season," said Jennifer Provenzano, Canton Leisure Services Recreation Specialist. "By rewarding these healthy lifestyle choices, we’re adding a real element of excitement to being active outdoors." Look for future Random Acts of Fitness squad sightings this spring. Canton Leisure Services’ 2009 Fall Discover Brochure was awarded the "Marketing Showcase Award" for a Single Brochure for a recreation and park publication distributed to the public highlighting the broad and diverse offerings of an active agency. This marketing piece was judged on design, readability, use of graphics and photos, and the ability to persuade and inform the public.

As one of the prime Canton community communication tools, the Discover Brochure is published three times each year and includes a detailed listing of classes, programs and events offered by the Leisure Services Department.
