Canton To Host Portions of 2009 Senior Olympics

Canton, MI, August 6, 2009 -The Fifth Annual Western Wayne County Senior Olympics will take place at various communities for men and women age 50 or older during the week of August 17, 2009. There will be a variety of activities and locations throughout the week to choose from.

Opening day festivities kick off at 8 a.m. on Monday, August 17 at Hines Park with the Opening Day Expo, Breakfast with Robert Ficano, Opening Ceremony - Torch Lighting, and a 5K Run. Following will be a Fun Walk and Softball Throw at 10 a.m., then a Frisbee Toss, Football Toss, Bean Bag Kick and Soccer Kick.

Other locations in Wayne County will be hosting events on August 17 as well, including Euchre at the Plymouth Cultural Center at 1:30 p.m., Ballroom Dancing at September Days at 2 p.m. and a Basketball Shoot in Canton at 2 p.m.

Events on Tuesday, August 18 include:

  • Drop off photos and art at the Northville Senior Center from 9 – 10 a.m.
  • Baking Contest in Northville from 9 – 10 a.m.
  • Horseshoes at Garden City Park at 9 a.m.
  • Biking five and ten miles at Westland Central Park at 8:30 a.m.
  • Volleyball at Northville Hillside at 10 a.m.
  • Shuffleboard at Van Buren Quirk Park at 1 p.m.
  • Creative Writing at the Northville Senior Center at 1 p.m.
  • Pick-up and Reception - winners announced - Northville Senior Center at 3 p.m.

Don’t miss the Wednesday, August 19 events:

  • Golf at Warren Valley Golf at 8 a.m.
  • Swimming at the Livonia Community Rec. Center at 9 a.m.
  • Pinochle and Bridge at the Friendship Center in Westland (Lunch) at 9 a.m.
  • Billiards at the Wayne Bowl at 9 a.m.
  • Marksmanship in Westland at 1 p.m.

Events on Thursday, August 20 will include Bowling at Wayne Bowl at 9 a.m.; Table tennis at the Livonia Civic Center at 9 a.m. and Tennis at Capital Park in Redford at 9 a.m.

The 2009 Senior Olympic events will wind down on Friday, August 21 with a Banquet at the Westland Senior Resources Center at Noon.
