Canton’s Heritage Hideout Playscape Temporarily Closed

Canton, MI – May 4, 2009 - Based on test results and the recommendation of an environmental testing consultant, Canton Township has temporarily closed the Heritage Hideout Playscape located in Heritage Park and just east of the Summit on the Park.

The presence of arsenic was detected in the safety surface of the structure and exceeds standards for safe direct contact. Arsenic was used as a preservative in the pressure-treated wood at the playscape, which was built in 1995. Temporary fencing is being erected to close the playscape today.

During the next few weeks, the existing wood chips used as a safety fall surface will be removed and properly disposed of, a new safety fall surface will be installed and the entire play structure will be re-sealed in compliance with recommended standards. It is anticipated that the playscape will re-open before Memorial Day.

Arsenic is found in the natural environment in some abundance in rock, soil, water, air and in some foods. According to the EPA, arsenic is most dangerous when ingested. The steps being taken at the playscape are preventative in nature and are intended to provide a safe play area.

"We understand that this is an inconvenience because the Heritage Hideout playground is a very popular place in Canton, but Canton is also very committed to the safety of its youth," stated Canton Supervisor Phil LaJoy. Canton Leisure Services will provide its recreation station as much as possible in the area adjacent to the play structure as an alternative play area. The playground located in the northern section of Heritage Park remains open and residents are encouraged to enjoy the other play areas throughout Canton.

Additional play areas are available at Freedom Park, located at the southwest corner of Sheldon and Palmer Roads; Griffin Park, located at Sheldon Road between Cherry Hill and Saltz Roads; Barchester Park, located on Barchester Road east of Hanford Road; Flodin Park, located on Saltz Road east of Morton Taylor; and Independence Park, located at the southwest corner of Denton and Proctor Roads.
