New Temporary Public Art Exhibit Along Canton’s Ford Road Coming Soon
Canton, MI - April 21, 2009 - Preparations are underway to replace Canton’s Temporary Public Art Exhibit currently located along Ford Road with new sculptures this week. The new exhibit will be in place for one year.
As art is uninstalled, new sculptures will be displayed at several returning locations, in addition to new sites in the district. Confirmed sites include: Target, Willow Creek, New Towne Center (Kohl’s), Canton Corners and Canton Cinema. Due to an electric underground wiring project slated to begin this spring along Ford Road, several current exhibition locations will not be able to display the new artwork. Included in the sites that will not be able to participate in this year’s exhibit is Griffin Funeral Home, located at 42600 Ford Road.
David Griffin, Griffin Funeral Home Director stated, "We are proud to have worked with and supported the Canton community as a site to temporarily exhibit these artistic treasures. We look forward to being the future site of engaging visual pieces that build community through free, accessible, and quality exhibitions."
Previous exhibitions have garnered great community attention, discussion and resulted in some permanent acquisitions. This current display will mark the fourth exhibit in the Canton’s ongoing series of temporary exhibitions, each with the support of the Downtown Development Authority, in partnership with the Canton Cultural Commission’s Public Art Committee, who commissioned the Midwest Sculpture Initiative to install artworks.
The Canton DDA provided the funding for the Temporary Art Exhibit, using tax dollars generated within the DDA District and designated for the promotion and economic vitality of the District. The placement of public art along Canton’s Ford Road is an effort to help create an identity for the community’s primary retail corridor and to convey a message that the community values the cultural arts.
"The previous exhibitions have been very successful in capturing the public's attention and stimulate dialogue about public art," said Debbie Bilbrey-Honsowetz, Canton’s Economic Development Manager. "These newest sculptures will hopefully further our community's discussion of inspired public spaces."
