Input Still Needed For Future Park Developments

Canton Leisure Serves is still seeking community input to update Park Master Plans for two parks located in Northwest Canton; Preservation Park and Patriot Park. Development of the two sites will include both passive and active recreation. The Parks and Recreation staffs are seeking ideas on amenities that will increase residents' access to natural spaces, trails, gardens, athletics, art, and other desired amenities.

Preservation Park, located at 500 North Ridge Road, is currently home to several Historic Buildings, Community Gardens, the Farmers Market, and Dog Park. Patriot Park, located on the Northwest corner of Ford Road and Ridge Road, is currently undeveloped, natural space.

Residents are invited to attend our focus groups:

Preservation Park Community Forum
Monday, April 7 from 7-8 p.m. Canton Administration Building, located at 1150 S. Canton Center Road (Preservation Park, located at 500 North Ridge Road, is now home to several historic buildings, Community Gardens, the Canton Farmers Market, and Dog Park.)

Patriot Park Focus Group Open House

Canton Leisure Services Earns National Agency Re-Accreditation For Excellence in Operation and Service in 2013

Canton Leisure Services is once again recognized for excellence in the field of parks and recreation management.

Canton Leisure Services earned re-accreditation and remains one of only 119 agencies in the country currently holding national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

The process of re-accreditation is extensive and takes approximately one year to accomplish.

Accreditation is based on an agency's compliance with the 156 standards for national accreditation.

CAPRA accreditation includes three phases after the application process:

  • development of an agency self-assessment report,
  • on-site peer review performed by a Commission-approved visitation team,
  • and the Commission's review and decision.

To become accredited, agencies must comply with all 36 fundamental standards and meet 85% of the remaining 120 standards. Canton Leisure Services is pleased to announce a 100% score was obtained by meeting every standard in all ten categories.

Canton Leisure Services, originally accredited in 2004 and re-accredited in 2008, is currently one of only two CAPRA accredited agencies in the state of Michigan.

Accreditation is valid for a period of five years.

Leisure Services programs are led by the Recreation Division. Programming is developed for people of all ages, including preschool, youth and teens, adults and seniors. Specific areas include Aquatics, Athletics, the Canton Sports Center, the B.L.O.C.K. Teen Center, the Senior Adults Program, Youth Development (Teens), Health/ Wellness and Community Events.

The activities and programs provide opportunities for families and friends to build relationships, create a sense of belonging in the community, and positively impact the local economy.

The Leisure Services Department comprises three divisions - Parks, Recreation/ Facilities and Golf plus Central Services which serves as the clearinghouse for communications, accounts payable and personnel issues.

The respective divisions are responsible for the administrative functions required to lead the diverse and rapidly growing operation that allows for coordination of resources which ensures effective and efficient delivery of services.

Canton Township prides itself on providing an excellent system of parks which offer a variety of activities for residents, plus a place for families to gather for picnics and other outdoor activities. Park pavilions and the gazebo in Heritage Park are available for rental by community groups and individuals.
